You’re probably wondering, what the hell is a CB and how is it related to camping? Well, a CB is a Citizens Band radio, ya know…the kind truckers use. And it’s related to camping because a group of friends that I go camping with have them, and it makes it easy to talk between cars going down the road. Yes, I have cell phone…..but it’s really inconvenient to call 2-3 other cars at the same time. Especially when seconds can count. So in preparation of the camping season and the first outing of the season I decided to get this done.
20 years ago, and another life, I used to pay with these things quite a bit. It was long before the internet, forums, facebook, and cell phones. In fact, 20 years ago…the radio waves were pretty saturated with conversations. Of course, by conversation, I mean everyone yelling at everyone else….and usually at the same time. We had fun with them too. We would play hide and go seek (rabbit) with them. It was also a good way to find parties on the weekends, or friends at the lake. And like every thing else, drama came with, if you let it.
Hell back in the 70’s (in the long, long ago) songs and movies got made just to feature the CB, such as Convoy and Smokey and the Bandit. Of course, then there was my favorite show growing up “The Dukes of Hazzard“. Artists like CW McCall and Cledus Maggard owe their careers to the CB. Of course, there’s a whole lingo that goes with the CB too.
So what did I get
Well back in the day, I always wanted a Galaxy radio. They were great radios and they would walk and talk as they say. So that’s what I bought, a Galaxy 959. Of course, back then I used to get in trouble with it too.
